Canada Post Comes Through

In addition to getting back on the pickleball courts, we’ve tackled a few projects here at Viewpoint Golf and RV Resort. I agreed to take on pickleball coaching sessions again this year, so I need to knock some rust off my game. I played last Friday and again Monday and yesterday. Donna’s been a regular at the tennis courts but she came out for pickleball yesterday. I played two games against her and her team prevailed both times.

Donna ordered some solar powered LED light strings and proceeded to hang one set across the front of our car port.

I finally put up the end-fed horizontal antenna for my ham radio. This antenna works on 10, 20 and 40-meter bands with a MFJ 939 antenna tuner. It took a couple of attempts to get it mounted right – I underestimated the weight of the coil trap and balun – or I overestimated the strength of the fiberglass electric fence posts I used to mount it. It sagged terribly. Another trip to Tractor Supply and I was able to reinforce the mounting posts. All is good now.

I also put the wheels back on Midget-San and made it road-worthy. I turned the key to the “on” position and allowed the electric fuel pump to run for about 30 seconds. Then I pulled the choke knob and hit the starter. It fired right up! I warmed it up and was thankful that I had put Stabil fuel stabilizer in before I filled the fuel tank for storage. When I did that, the drive back from the gas station was enough to run stabilized fuel throughout the fuel system and carburetor bowl. I took a test drive – ran it long enough to get all of the fluids up to temperature and put some fuel through the carburetor. It ran like a champ!

Yesterday, Donna tackled a tough project. She cleaned and organized our shed which serves as our laundry room, tool storage and my ham shack! I should have been out there helping her, but I had a major distraction.

I mentioned the guitar amplifier kit I ordered. It was coming from Canada and I had some trepidation after reading a few online horror stories regarding Canada Post. I didn’t need to worry. They estimated an arrival date of October 14th and turned the package over to USPS on Saturday, October 9th. Yesterday, I received notification that it was delivered to the Viewpoint post office!

We can only pick up packages here at Viewpoint between 11am and 1 pm. It was 12:30 pm when I saw the notification. I took Donna’s bicycle and high-tailed it to the post office. When I was given the package, I realized I made a mistake. It was rather large and weighed about 25 pounds. As I held it under my right arm and tried to mount the bike, I must have been a sight to see. There were a few people at the parcel pick-up window and they all stopped what they doing to watch me.

I managed to get on the bike without falling or dropping the package – barely. Once I got rolling I was okay – I balanced the package against my right thigh. Luckily I didn’t have to pedal very hard to get back home. As I reached the end of the 1600 row and approached our driveway, I now had another issue. I had to stop and make sure I got my left foot down without dropping the box or falling to the right – the 25-pound box had me seriously off balance.

I called out to Donna – she was in the shed. I managed to get my left foot down and she relieved me of the package. Job done! I started unboxing the kit right away.

Inside the cabinet, I found the 120-page builder’s guide and a bags of components and hardware. This is going to be a challenge to build. As you can tell by the number of control openings on the front and back of the cabinet, this is a complicated circuit. It will be the most complicated amp I’ve attempted.

The first task was an inventory of all of the parts and comparing it to the bill of materials list. This is more tedious and time consuming than you can imagine. There are many different types and values of resistors and capacitors needed to build an audio amplifier.

I don’t trust my eye to read the color stripes on resistors to determine the values – the colors seem a bit off at times. I measure each resistor with a multimeter and group them together by type and value and tape them to a sheet of cardboard with the value written next to them. Then I do the same with the capacitors – I measure each one with an ESR meter, group them and tape them to the board.

When I start building, I’ll verify the value of each component before I solder it in place. The value and type of resistor coupled with a capacitor is how an amplifier is “voiced.” These components create filter circuits that attenuate certain frequencies while allowing the desired boosted frequencies to pass. This is how the tone of amplified sound is created.

The amplifier I’m going to build is based on a Dumble Overdrive Special circuit. I think it’ll be a great companion amp to the Ken Fischer Trainwreck type amp I built nine years ago. The stories behind these amps and their creators is interesting and I’ll write a post about them soon.

Donna cooked up a favorite dish last week. It’s chicken Lombardy and she served it with brown rice and asparagus.

The weather has been favorable. On Monday, we had gusty winds in the afternoon and evening as a cold front moved in. Yesterday’s high was only 71 degrees. We expect to have highs in the mid-70s today and tomorrow before we warm back up into the mid-to-upper 80s by the weekend.

And Then There Was Stroganoff

I haven’t posted in over a week. That’s mainly because I haven’t had anything exciting to write about. We’ve been slowly getting settled in to our place here at Viewpoint Golf and RV Resort, mainly staying indoors. It’s still hot here in Mesa, Arizona.

Ozark the cat has definitely settled in. She doesn’t like travel days, although she’s perfectly happy in the coach when we’re stationary – especially when we stay put for a week or more. Back-to-back travel days aren’t her thing – they really aren’t our thing either. Ozark can roam from room to room here and she has a few favorite spots.

I think Ozark would be happy if we just stayed here permanently. Donna and I are content, but we know we’ll get the hitch itch sooner or later.

I’m happy to have our Traeger wood pellet fired smoker/grill available again. When we hit the road last spring, I had to leave it behind. Without our cargo trailer, I just didn’t have room for it. Last week, I bought a two-pack of USDA Prime tri-tip roasts at Costco. They were a little over two pounds each. I think when you take it out of the package, it’s correct to refer to them as roasts. Once you grill them and cut it into portions, it’s more appropriate to call them steaks. I wrote a post about tri-tips here.

I prepared one on Tuesday with my usual tri-tip seasoning – salt, pepper and garlic powder in a dry rub. I set the Traeger at 220 degrees and let it cook for about 90 minutes. Before I took them out of the Traeger, I preheated our gas grill to 450 degrees. I transferred the tri-tip to the grill and seared each side for three minutes. They were cooked to a perfect medium rare with an internal temperature of 130-135 degrees.

The USDA Prime tri-tips were $12.99/lb at Costco. A pack of two tri-tips ran just over $50, but we’ll get several meals out them. The first tri-tip was an excellent dinner on Tuesday, we had at least half of it left over.

On Saturday, Donna prepared beef stroganoff with the remainder of the tri-tip. She used noodles from Sprouts that were billed as “home made egg noodles.” The stroganoff was delicious and once again we had leftovers for another lunch meal.

I have a number of projects that need to be attended to, but I’ve been procrastinating due to the heat. We’ve had only two days that weren’t triple digit heat since my last post. I got a start on the End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW) antenna for my ham shack. The EFHW will allow me to seamlessly tune the 10-meter, 20-meter and 40-meter bands by going through my MFJ auto-tuner with my Yaesu FT-991A radio. I hope to get the antenna finished by the next weekend.

My guitar body, neck and hardware are scheduled to arrive via FedEx tomorrow. That will be my priority in the next week or so. I already received a full compliment of special tools from Stew-Mac to finish the frets and set everything up. I also decided to sell my Egnater guitar amplifier and cabinet and build another amp. I’ll write about that later, once I get it underway.

Tomorrow morning, we’ll be up at dark-thirty. I will drive Donna to Phoenix Sky Harbor airport for her 6am flight. She’s going back to Vermont to visit her parents. They have plans to travel to Ogunquit, Maine to spend a couple of nights on the coast. I’ll be a bachelor for a week – I’ll have plenty to do with the guitar project and ham stuff. I also need to get out to the storage facility and see about making a permanent fix for the left front body panel on the coach. I need to figure a way to get it back into proper shape so I can rivet the front section to the frame.

Donna has been getting out early in the morning to play pickleball or tennis before it gets too hot out. I’m not up for pickleball at 6:30am, so I’ll wait for cooler temps to get back on the courts.

After a couple more hot afternoons, the forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-90s for the rest of the month. That’ll be a relief.

Cool August Day

We’ve had a fairly quiet week here at Skagit Valley RV Park. The park is full and it seems like there are a number of long-term residents of the place. I’m curious about the fifth-wheel trailer next to our site. I haven’t seen anyone there and the trailer is covered with cob webs. There’s a Dodge Ram pickup truck parked in the site, but I haven’t seen it move. There are current Washington license plates on the rigs but the lack of activity seems strange.

We got together with my oldest daughter, Alana and her husband, Kevin at Farmstrong Brewing on Wednesday and our granddaughter Lainey joined us. The brewery is only a quarter of the mile from the RV park, so Donna and I walked there.

On Thursday, we met them at the Skagit Golf and Country Club where they’re members. Alana texted us and advised when she thought they would be coming off the 18th hole. We arrived a little after 3pm and saw them on the 18th green. We watched them putt, then went to the clubhouse for a drink and early dinner. Kevin’s son Nick was also there. I don’t know why I didn’t take any photos!

It’s always nice to get together with my daughters and we’ll get to see Alana’s family again tomorrow for Sunday dinner. Other than that, it’s been mostly our usual activities. Donna went out for a couple of bike rides and she practices clarinet every other day or so. I do the same with my guitar.

Speaking of the guitar, I use pedals to alter the sound of my electric guitar. I especially need them with the small practice amp to get an over-driven tube sound and I almost always run some reverb and delay. For the past ten years or so, I’ve used an Hermida Audio reverb pedal which is pretty subtle. It adds a little ambience, like your amp is set up in an empty room with wood floors. I thought I might like something that had a little more flair than that.

I did some research and thought the Omni pedal designed by Robert Keeley would be the one. I found a good deal on one with free shipping and bought it. It’s smaller than the Hermida Audio pedal and fits nicely on my board, but it packs a lot more sound than the Hermida! It has three base settings – room – spring – plate. Each one of these settings can be adjusted for the intensity of the effect. In the room setting, it can be subtle. The spring setting gives a little more oomph for the surf guitar sound and the plate setting can get really wild. I’m liking this pedal.

I have my pedal board set up with the guitar plugged into a TC Electronic tuner on the right. This pedal will cut the signal from the guitar and display the note being played and whether it’s flat or sharp, allowing me to quickly tune the guitar without any sound coming from the amp. Next in line is a MXR Modified OverDrive pedal. This boosts the guitar signal and can drive the amp into distortion – great for rock songs. The next pedal is the Keeley Omni reverb unit and last is a MXR Carbon Copy delay. I use a very conservative setting on the delay as it can easily get out of control and oscillate. Set carefully, it can create sounds like U2’s guitarist, the Edge. That’s my simple pedal board set-up.

I also have my Buddipole Versatee vertical high frequency ham radio antenna set up. I had a hard time getting it to tune – the closest I could come to resonance was a standing wave ratio (SWR) of about 1.5:1. A lot of guys would be happy with that, but I’m used to this antenna tuning to a SWR of 1.1:1 or less. The higher the SWR, the more loss of signal going out. Higher SWR can also force the output stage to reduce power to prevent damage. It’s a vicious cycle. To compound the issue, the 20-meter HF band conditions have been poor. Yesterday I futzed around with the antenna again, resetting the coil and counterpoise and got the SWR below 1.25:1. Better, but not perfect.

It rained off and on overnight and we had a couple of showers this morning. We didn’t let that stop us from going to the farmers’ market at the Skagit River Walk park. I told Donna if you stayed inside every time it rained in western Washington, you wouldn’t be out much! Of course, July and August are typically the driest months of the year, but they still average 1.2 and 1.3 inches of rain respectively. At least we don’t have any smoke now.

We’ll probably have a few more showers through tomorrow morning. Today’s high is only 68 degrees. Tomorrow should be a little warmer and dry by late morning – early afternoon. As I mentioned, we plan to go to Kevin and Alana’s for a cookout.

The forecast for the week ahead has the warmer weather returning with temperatures in the 80s and maybe even 90 degrees by the end of the week. We’ll be here until the 16th and we don’t have a clue where we’re heading next. We’ll have to look at weather, fire and road condition reports and decide in about a week.

By the way, after her walk today, Donna stopped in the RV park office to find out if we should be worried about our neighbor. Apparently, he doesn’t get around too well and that’s why we haven’t seen him. But the gal in the office appreciated our concern.

A Tale of Two Beaches

The temperature reached the mid-80s on Friday. Donna and I took a drive over to Hayden Lake. We cruised around the lake last year in Midget-San, but didn’t find any public access to the lake. This time I wised up – I took a look at Google Earth and found Honeysuckle Beach. It’s actually really easy to find – you just head east on Honeysuckle Avenue to the end of the road where there is a free parking area and boat ramp. They have a small concession trailer – candy and ice cream – and a sandy beach with an isolated swimming area.

It’s a beautiful area with grass and shade trees as well as the sand and water. Hayden Lake has an area of roughly 3,800 acres with about 40 miles of shoreline – definitely large enough for watercraft and there are three public boat ramps. But, as we found last year, most of the shoreline is privately owned and access is limited.

Saturday morning we went to the Kootenai County Farmers’ Market. It’s only about a mile away from the Elk’s Lodge at the corner of Prairie Avenue and US95. We found all of the usual vendors there and lots of shoppers. The market is set among large coniferous trees and the ground is covered with wood shavings. It’s one of our favorite markets.

When we returned from the market, I set up my ham radio equipment. I put up my Buddipole Versatee vertical antenna and tuned it for the 20-meter band. I really like my RigExpert antenna analyzer – it allows me to really fine-tune the antenna resonance. The atmospheric conditions were not favorable and I remembered the electrical interference I experienced here last year – the noise floor was high on Saturday.

I was able to pick up several signals – including a guy in Barcelona, Spain (EA7JE) – I think he was belting out 1,500 watts. He couldn’t hear my transmissions though. I tried joining in a few other conversations, but it seemed my signal was too weak. I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with my radio output stage – I knew my antenna was set up right. Then I reached Steve (WQ6L) in Cupertino, California. Cupertino is just outside of San Jose, about 800 straight-line miles from here. He told me my audio was crystal clear with a strong signal – so all was well, it was matter of the atmosphere not cooperating with me. That’s how ham radio can be sometimes.

We had more smoke in the air over the weekend. Sunday we decided to drive over to Sandpoint – about 45 miles from here. We visited Sandpoint in our first year on the road – you can read about it here. Sandpoint is a cool little town right on Lake Pend Oreille. By the way, the town of Ponderay is adjacent to Sandpoint and that’s how you pronounce Pend Oreille.

Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho – the lake is 43 miles long and has a surface area of 148 square miles. It’s over 1,100 feet deep in some areas. Unlike Hayden Lake, Lake Pend Oreille shoreline is mostly uninhabited forest. In Sandpoint, there is a city beach with free parking and lots of sandy beach. It has a couple of lifeguards and a designated swimming area. The lake is also popular for boating and we saw power boats, kayaks and lots of sailboats on the lake.

The lake is fed by the Clark Fork River and the Pack River. It drains into the Pend Oreille River and also feeds the subterranean Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer. The Pend Oreille River runs west into Washington and makes its way north into Canada before draining into the upper Columbia River.

We walked through the old downtown area and found many of the shops and restaurants were closed on Sunday. This surprised me as Sandpoint is a tourist destination. We had lunch on the back deck of The Burger Dock, overlooking the Sandpoint Marina.

On our trek through downtown in search of a restaurant with a water view, we entered the Cedar Street Bridge Public Market. This is a long, narrow building set on the old Cedar Street Bridge.

The Cedar Street Bridge was built nearly 100 years ago and originally served as a pedestrian and automobile crossing to the train depot. As train travel declined, the bridge was hardly used. In the late 1970s, access to the bridge was blocked and it fell into disrepair. The city contemplated tearing the old bridge down in the early ’80s, but a local entrepreneur, inspired by the Ponte Vecchio Bridge in Florence, Italy, proposed leasing the bridge and rebuilding it into a public marketplace. It went through several iterations over the years before the current 400-foot long building went through a $1.25 million renovation in 2007. Like most of Sandpoint, we found many of the shops in the market were closed on Sunday.

By the time we returned to the Elk’s Lodge, the temperature had climbed above 90 degrees. It was time for air conditioning! It’s partly cloudy this morning, but we can expect the temperature to rise well above 90 degrees today. The rest of the week looks a little more comfortable with highs in the mid-80s.

Quiet Fourth of July

We’re near the end of our stay at Ririe Reservoir in Idaho. Last Wednesday, I set up my Yaesu FT-991a ham radio on a table outside our coach. My antenna has been phenomenal in this location – it tunes in really well. I made a number of contacts all over the country – I talked to a guy in Nebraska, one in Arkansas and a guy in Arlington, Texas. But the most interesting contact was with a station in Prescott, Arizona.

Wednesday was June 30th and the station I contacted had a special event callsign N7GMH and I talked to Doug there. The special event was a fundraiser for the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial. The Granite Mountain Hotshots were part of the Prescott Fire Department. On June 30, 2013, the 20-member crew was fighting a wild fire on Yarnell Hill near Prescott. Nineteen of the twenty members were over-run by the fire and perished. The lone survivor had been placed on lookout duty. He warned the team of a shift in the fire via radio and was advised by his team leader to evacuate his position. We saw the memorial when were in Congress, Arizona near Yarnell Hill the year after the tragedy.

On Thursday morning, Donna was up at 4:30am to take a ride with Jeff and Deb Spencer to Grand Teton National Park for a hike. I stayed here and took their fox terrier, Sam for a couple of walks. They hiked a trail from Jenny Lake up to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point and beyond. They saw an abundance of wildlife – they spotted a red fox, marmots, river otters and a moose. They hiked a little over eight miles and were gone most of the day – it was close to a 90-mile drive each way.

Donna had jambalaya in the slow cooker and the Spensers joined us for dinner on Friday. By evening, it’s enjoyable to sit outside in the shade at the picnic table. The temperatures had remained manageable with highs in the mid-80s, but we still ran the air conditioners in the afternoon.

We went back to the Idaho Falls farmers’ market Saturday morning. We ran into Jeff and Deb there although we weren’t actively trying to find them. After Donna purchased some fresh produce, we walked south across Broadway to the Japanese Friendship Garden. The garden commemorates the sister-city program – Idaho Falls’ sister city is Tokai-Mura, Japan. The garden is an island in the Snake River just south of the Broadway bridge. You might recall an earlier post where I described how the river is split down the middle with the water level on the east bank much higher than on the west bank and man-made structures create a spillway over rocks from one side of the river to the other.

The Japanese Friendship Garden island is right on this divide. Some water from the higher east side flows through water features on the island spilling into the lower west side. I’m not sure when the garden was established, but I know a pavilion was added in 2016. There are Japanese Friendship Gardens in Phoenix, Arizona, San Diego and San Jose, California.

We maintained a low-key Fourth of July. Fireworks are prohibited here at Ririe Reservoir due to fire danger. There were fireworks displays nearby at Rigby Lake. We could hear them from afar, but didn’t see them. We had thundershowers around the area and the temperature cooled considerably as we dined at the picnic table on a feast of babyback ribs courtesy of Jeff and his Traeger. I didn’t pack our Traeger, so we haven’t had ribs since leaving Mesa in May. The thundershowers eventually caught us here in the park, but we were all inside by then.

Rain and gusty winds continued in the night. This morning, Jeff and Deb hit the road early heading to their next destination – the Sawtooth National Forest near Stanley, Idaho. I’ve already dismantled my antenna and started packing some of our gear. Donna went out to kayak on the Ririe Reservoir and we’ll be packing the kayak and her bike in the bed of the truck this afternoon.

It looks like we’ll have a warm week ahead of us with temperatures in the 90s daily. We plan to pull out tomorrow morning and head west on US20 toward Boise. We’ll see what comes up next.

Farm to Table

Last Thursday was Donna’s birthday. It was my youngest daughter, Shauna’s, birthday as well. We celebrated Donna’s birthday by going out to dinner at Olio Restaurant in Mancos, about 17 miles east of Cortez. This restaurant is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday and tables must be reserved in advance. It’s an intimate setting with only seven tables – only four tables were occupied while we were there.

They have a menu that frequently changes, depending on fresh ingredients in season and they have a large wine selection. We started with a three-cheese board with rosemary-fig jam, grill toasted bread and an assortment of nuts and dried fruits. We chose Delice de Bourgogne (creamy French cheese made from cow’s milk), Caciotta Dei Boschi Al Tartufo (firm Italian cheese made from sheep’s milk) and Bucheron (soft French cheese made from goat’s milk) for our three cheeses. I ordered a bottle of 2014 Pugnitello by Corte alla Flora – a bold Tuscan red wine to go with the meal.

The cheese board and wine were extraodinary. For entrees, Donna hard a hard time deciding between the Tomato Braised Heluka Pork Cheeks on ‘Cacio e Pepe’ Bucatini Pie  or the Confit of Poussin on Mushroom Farro with Marsala Sauce, Shaved Leek & Fennel Slaw. She went for the poussin which is a small chicken – about the size of a cornish hen – that’s been partially deboned before roasting. Only the leg and wing bones remain while the bird still appears to be intact.

I was excited by the Grilled Nebraska Wagyu New York Strip with Olio Signature Steak Sauce on the menu. I’ve never had wagyu beef before, but I knew about it – at least that’s what I thought. True wagyu beef only comes from Japanese cattle – it can be one of four breeds. The most well-known is probably Kobe beef. All Kobe beef is wagyu, but not all wagyu is Kobe. There are four breeds of wagyu in Japan. Wagyu (Wah-gyoo) can be translated as wa (Japanese) gyu (cow). Wagyu cattle are genetically disposed to having a high percentage of intramuscular fat – meaing a well-marbled meat that makes the tastiest and juiciest steaks.

Fifty years ago, some Japanese wagyu cattle were exported to America for breeding, but Japan soon outlawed any export of live wagyu or any genetic material capable of reproducing wagyu cattle – they declared it a National Treasure. But the cat was out of the bag and some ranchers bred the few available cows. But the gene pool was diluted and cross-breeding occurred. Nowadays, most American wagyu is a far cry from Japanese wagyu – it’s mostly angus DNA with a small amount of wagyu genetics. Some people look down on it and call it wagus.

Back to my dish. The Nebraska Wagyu is not the Japanese wagyu I was expecting. It was definitely more of a wagus beef, a lean one as well. I was sorely disappointed and in the future, I will choose USDA Prime over American Wagyu. The real deal Japanese wagyu goes for more than $100/pound and I’ve seen cuts as high as $300/pound. Although export of live cattle and genetic material is banned, you can still get butchered Japanese wagyu beef.

American wagyu – see the difference?

I should mention that Donna volunteered to help Carolyn Ower in her garden a few days a week while we’re here. She spent Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning last week weeding alongside Carolyn who is very happy for the help. Between gardening and caring for her chickens, Carolyn has been very busy getting ready for the farmers’ market here in Cortez that will open next weekend.

In my last post, I called the Ower’s place a ranch and linked to last year’s post where I called it a farm. So, which is it? Here’s the thing: I’ve found several definitions describing a ranch versus a farm. Most agree that a farm generally focuses on raising crops while a ranch will be mainly utilizing the land to raise large animals – cattle, sheep, horses, etc. A ranch will also be a farm when you consider that they usually grow feed crops and may have vegetable gardens. So a ranch can be a farm, but a farm isn’t a ranch. Does that make sense? By the way, the Owers call their place Ower’s Farm. Dairy farms seem to contradict the convention – they have cattle and usually grow feed but they aren’t called ranches.

On Saturday, we played in a pickleball shootout at the Centennial Park in town. The local pickleball club organized the event and we signed up online through Track It Hub. It was a round-robin type affair and in the first round, everyone played three games with different partners and opposition. Then we had a break that stretched to over 45 minutes as one court got a late start due to a no-show and they had to wait for a replacement player. The long break had an adverse effect on my game. I started by scoring 31 out of a possible 33 points in the first round and moved up a bracket. When we resumed, I felt stiff and lethargic and didn’t play well in the second round. Donna felt like she played okay. She had stiff competition in the first round, but had the second highest score. And in the second round, she scored 30 out of 33. We’ll probably sign up to play again in the next shootout tentatively scheduled for June 12.

Last week, Donna made a Dijon sauce to serve over sweet-spicy grilled chicken breast. It was tasty, but I was surprised to see the brand of Dijon she found.

Friday she grilled chicken and also a medley of peppers, fresh zuchini, onions and really young bok choy. The zucchini and bok choy were gifts from Carolyn Ower’s garden.

Yesterday, Donna tried a new-to-us salmon recipe. She grilled a wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon with a glaze of honey, olive oil, lemon juice, soy sauce, Worchestershire sauce, finely diced ginger and shallots. It was winner and we’ll definitely go with this again, especially since cooking it in foil made for super-easy cleanup.

The weather has been very agreeable with a few clouds and daily highs reaching about 80 degrees. I’ve been alternating the afternoon hours between playing around with ham radio or practicing guitar. After not playing much over the last couple of years, I’m finding my guitar playing is going well – I feel like I’m playing better than ever, but there are some songs I used to play that I don’t remember.

The weather forecast calls for a cooler day tomorrow with a 40% chance of afternoon thunderstorms – of course I just washed the truck. It’s supposed to heat up after that with daily highs in the upper 80s. We’ll be here for two more weeks.

Sand Canyon Cliff Dwellings

Last year when we were here in Cortez, we met a couple at the farmers’ market that have a small ranch. Their names are Bob and Carolyn Ower, and they sell fresh eggs, produce and beef from their ranch. I wrote about visiting their place here. Last week, Donna contacted Carolyn to see about getting some eggs.

We went to their place on Saturday and had a nice visit. Carolyn kindly gifted Donna with a dozen farm fresh eggs and a couple of zucchini squashes. Carolyn’s eggs always look like Easter eggs because she keeps a variety of chicken breeds and they lay different colored eggs.

A strange thing happened as we were leaving. As I started to pull out of their driveway, our truck suddenly lost all power and wouldn’t rev above idle. I shut off the engine, waited about 10 seconds and restarted. It ran fine but the check engine light as well as the traction control symbol were illuminated. Lucky for us, it happened in the Owers driveway – Bob runs a small auto repair shop on the property. He was kind enough to connect a scan tool and read the fault codes. We had P2127 and P2138. These relate to an accelerator pedal position error.

Bob cleared the codes and they didn’t return. The most likely cause of the error is a bad pedal position sensor – modern cars are drive-by-wire, there’s no cable providing a physical connection between the accelerator pedal and throttle. It’s strictly electrical with a pedal position sensor and an actuator at the throttle valve. I’m still debating whether I should order a new pedal assembly which includes the sensor or not. The fault hasn’t returned and I don’t like throwing parts at a sporadic fault.

Sunday, while I watched the Formula 1 race from Monaco, Donna hiked the Sand Canyon Trail. The full trail is about 6.5 miles – she started at the bottom and the full length to the top gains significant elevation. Donna went about four miles up, then turned back. She saw many cliff dwellings – ruins from an ancient Pueblo tribe. Here are a few photos she took on her hike.

We had some rain on Friday and high winds which carried over to Saturday. The temperatures were much cooler – officially the high on Friday is listed at 66 degrees, but I don’t think we reached that here in the RV park. The night time temperatures really dropped with lows around 32 degrees over the weekend.

I put up my HF ham radio antenna – a Buddipole Versatee Vertical – Monday and broke out my ham radio rig. Conditions were good Monday afternoon and I made contact with Janez Celarc (S51DX) in Vhrnika, Slovenia – about 6,000 miles from Cortez, Colorado. I had talked to Janez last year when we were in Idaho. He was working a contest this time and didn’t want to chat – he was trying to record as many North America contacts as possible in a given amount of time. He just took my name, callsign and location, then moved on to the next contact.

As I’ve mentioned many times before, we’re not camping, we’re living the RV lifestyle. We strive to eat fresh cooked homestyle meals that are nutritious and healthy, just like we did in a sticks-and-bricks house. On Saturday, I made Japanese fried rice and Donna grilled jumbo shrimp to go with it. Delicious.

We love fried rice and I make use of any leftovers. On Sunday, I made omelettes filled with fried rice for breakfast.

Last night, Donna grilled zucchini marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and pepper. After grilling, she sprinkled the zucchini with a mixture of chopped kosher salt and lemon zest. It was a great accompaniment to spaghetti with clam sauce.

Tomorrow is Donna’s birthday. Traditionally we go out for a nice dinner at a restaurant of her choice. Last year we were in Springerville on her birthday and with covid restrictions, we had to settle for Chinese take-out. This time we have a reservation for dinner tomorrow at Olio Restaurant in Mancos. Olio is run by chef Jason Blankenship and his wife, Michelle. Chef Jason has 25 years experience as a chef in the Houston, Texas area and Durango, Colorado. His restaurant here is exclusive – it’s only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday – reservations are required. The menu changes weekly and everything is prepared by Chef Jason – no big kitchen staff. We’re really looking forward to it and I’ll tell you all about it in my next post.

Motion is Lotion

We had a fairly quiet night at the Ute Mountain Casino truck lot Saturday night. There was a truck with refrigeration unit that ran a generator all night. To me, it’s just white noise and I don’t pay much attention to it, but for Donna, it’s bothersome. We had a leisurely breakfast at the casino restaurant – we were in no hurry as we were only 11 miles away from Cortez.

We checked in at La Mesa RV Park in Cortez, Colorado around 12:30pm. There was a camp host expecting us and he directed us to site 9. After backing into the site, I confirmed Dish Network satellite reception before setting up. I wasn’t going to stay for a month in a site with no satellite reception. We set up without any issues and I was done in plenty of time to watch the Moto GP race from France at 3:30pm.

Our site backs up to the car wash at the Speedway gas station next door. This can be a little noisy during the daytime, but we haven’t heard anyone at the car wash after dark. When we checked in, I asked about Shiree, whether she still spends much time here at the park. Shiree and her husband, Ames, own this park and one in Springerville, Arizona. The camp host gave us some bad news.

He said Shiree wasn’t doing well. In February, she had some dental work done which involved removing a tooth with an old filling. Apparently, mercury leaked from the old filling and poisoned her. She’s not able to get around on her own and is undergoing chelation treatment to remove the metal. We’re hoping she makes a full recovery.

Over the last week, I’ve been complaining about a sore right knee. I had surgery on this knee about 35 years ago. I injured it in a ski accident on Mount Hood in Oregon. I had a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and a torn medial meniscus. At that time, the surgeon told me he had to trim the torn meniscus as it wouldn’t regenerate. Over time, he thought this might lead to arthritis from bone on bone contact. I was thinking it might have finally caught up with me.

But then a curious thing happened. On Wednesday morning, I went with Donna to the pickleball courts. The soreness had improved so I thought I would give it go with a compression sleeve over my knee. After a few games, I didn’t feel any soreness at all. I thought it would be sore later in the day, but it didn’t happen.

Thursday morning we went back to the pickleball courts. I had the compression sleeve over my knee again, but wasn’t experiencing any pain. I played several games pain free and my knee remains pain free now. I don’t know how to explain it – maybe there’s something to the adage “Motion is lotion” and my knee is well lubricated again.

They have six courts at the park and a group of players that show up regularly. We were invited to sign up for a tournament a week from Saturday, which we did. The tournament format is basically a round robin with individual scores tracked. I’m curious to see what group they put Donna and me in – we’ll see how they rate our level of play.

Wednesday afternoon we drove out to Mancos – a little town about 17 miles east of Cortez. The locals pronounce it MAN-cuss. After a couple of wrong turns we found the Mancos Brewing Company and stopped in for a couple of beers on their outdoor patio. They have several good brews on tap.

Other than pickleball, we’ve had a quiet week. I had one small project. The inlet to our canister water filter system was leaking. The inlet has a hose fitting swaged onto a 3/4″ pipe thread. Over time, it had worn where the hose fitting rotates on the 3/4″ pipe threaded into the plastic canister. I couldn’t find a direct replacement, but the hardware store had a short 3/4″ pipe threaded on both ends with the threads oriented correctly to add a hose fitting to it. So I bought those and figured I had it made.

I came home, shut the water off and removed the old fitting. Then I found I had barely enough teflon tape to put one wrap on the pipe threads. I put it back together and it leaked! I made another run into town for a $1.50 roll of teflon tape. This time I double wrapped the threads and put it back together. No leaks at the filter. Job done or so I thought.

Later I saw the area near the filters was still wet. Now the end fitting on our fresh water hose was leaking. I don’t remember how old the hose is, but I suspect we’ve had it for at least five years. I ordered a new drinking water hose from Amazon – it should be delivered today.

Today won’t be a good day for outdoor projects though. After having daily temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees, we have wind and rain today and the thermometer is only expected to reach 62 degrees.

I had another package delivered yesterday. I knew I would come across something that I needed, but left behind in Mesa. I tried to set up my Yaesu FT3DR handheld transceiver to work the local repeaters – one on a mountain top out side of Mancos and the other up in Dolores. But I didn’t have the cable to connect the radio to my laptop to program it. I ordered one from DX Engineering and it was delivered yesterday – but it was the wrong cable. I phoned them and we sorted out which cable I actually need and I shipped the wrong cable back to them. I should have the correct cable in a few days.

I’ll close with a couple of dinner plates. Wednesday, Donna grilled chicken that she simply seasoned with salt and pepper. She made creamed spinach and a baked spud to go with it.

Yesterday she marinated a pork tenderloin with her mojo marinade. I sliced garlic for the marinade. Donna asked for thin slices but I made them a little thicker than she usually does. She wondered how that would affect her recipe. It turned out to be an improvement – having the garlic 1-2mm thick added texture with no loss of flavor versus slicing it paper thin.

She grilled the pork last night and served it with sweet potato mash and French-cut green beans. We’ll use the leftovers to make street tacos for lunch today.

Not As Planned

Another week has gone by and I haven’t written a post. Things didn’t always go as planned this last week. I mentioned in my last post that I had to take our Nissan Frontier back to Sullivan Motors for a repair to the airbag system. I got up at 6am on Friday for coffee and breakfast before heading out at 7:15am.

They were going to change the clockspring for the airbag and said it would take all day. I didn’t understand this – I’ve never done this job on a Nissan, but I changed out six clocksprings in a day on Volkswagens. We had a quality engineer that wanted airbag clocksprings with various time/mileage for study. He sent me six new parts. I went to an auction yard in Avondale, Arizona where I found used Volkswagens and removed and replaced the clocksprings which I tagged with VIN and mileage and shipped them to the engineer. But, I digress.

I saw them take the truck into the shop right at 8am. Donna came about half an hour later to pick me up in Midget-San. We came home and I hit the pickleball courts. I took a phone call at 10am – it was Sullivan Motors. They guy told me he had bad news. The clockspring didn’t fix the problem so they ordered a control module. It’s an expensive part, but it’s on them as the airbag repair was part of the sales agreement. I’ll have to bring the truck to the Nissan dealer when they get the part – it requires programming by the dealer.

I told Donna I was a little worried about having the truck diagnosed by a parts replacer. Donna asked me what I meant by that. A parts replacer is a mechanic that lacks diagnostic skills – they read a fault code and jump to a conclusion without going through proper test procedures and just order the part they think will fix the problem. In my years with Volkswagen Technical Service, I ran into many examples of this. We’ll see if replacing the airbag control module was the right call.

Another plan that went awry was the title transfer for our new-to-us park model home. The seller wanted us to meet him at a third-party vehicle licensing place at 1pm on Monday. Donna and I arrived at the place right at 1pm. We saw a sign on the door that said service was by appointment only. Then we were told they used to do mobile home title transfers, but no longer do. They gave us the address and phone number of a place that does. I called the other outfit and the next appointment available was Wednesday morning at 10:30am. I made an appointment.

Then I called the Arizona Department of Transportation to see if they would be able to get us in. Their number went to a voice mail system that said call volumes are high, call back later – click! Typical service from a government agency.

Speaking of government agencies, I received the license plates from South Dakota for the Nissan Frontier. I looked at the registration reciept and saw they charged $460 excise tax. This was not right, because I paid Arizona sales tax when I bought the truck. South Dakota credits the sales tax for out-of-state vehicle purchases and only charges excise tax if the South Dakota tax is higher than the out-of-state tax – they charge the difference. I paid more than the South Dakota excise tax already, so the tax should have cancelled out.

I called the county treasurer office in Sioux Falls and they told me they had to get the documentation from the department of motor vehicles. This made no sense to me, I sent the documentation to the county treasurer as instructed, they should have records. They said they would call me back. The next afternoon I called them since no one called me back. I was told that the DMV records are being transferred to a new system and it would be weeks before they could retrieve them! I still had the documentation, so I sent it to the county again via email. I’m still waiting for a response.

Yesterday, we went to the third-party licensing place for our 10:30am appointment. What a disorganized zoo that was. It was 10:50am before we started the process and it took much longer than I expected. It was after 11:30am by the time we had everything signed and we were good to go. The park model home is officially ours.

Donna’s been sorting things out at the house – the sale included most of the stuff inside including furniture, appliances even kitchen utensils and linens. Donna will figure out what has to go before she starts moving our stuff in and getting it all organized. She also wants to paint before we move ourselves into the new house. That could take a few weeks.

Yesterday, while Donna was over at the house in the afternoon, I was puttering around in the trailer. It was breezy outside and wind gusts were picking up. Suddenly, great gusts of wind started rocking the trailer. I went out to check the canopy on the ham shack and it was whipping madly in the wind. I started removing the canvas but before I could take it all down the wind delivered a fatal blow. The ham shack canopy was destroyed.

Luckily I wasn’t sitting at the table with my ham gear at the time! The wind carried dirt and desert sand. To the north I could see a haboob – a dust/sand storm that obscured Usery Mountain.

The weather has been great, other than the wind storm. Sunday was cool – in the mid-60s. Monday was warmer and by Wednesday we had mid-80s! Today is a little cooler but the forecast calls for low 80s through the weekend.

Bitchin’ Sauce

I spent most of Saturday morning on the pickleball courts. I played in the men’s round-robin 3.0-3.5 matches and ended playing a total of nine games. I was pretty worn out by the end. Later we met up with Mike and Jodi Hall for a late lunch on the patio at Lucky Lou’s. We caught up on things – we haven’t seen them since before Christmas. Mike and I enjoyed a cigar and a few beers.

Afterwards, we made a stop at Winco where Donna restocked groceries and I found a nice cut of beef top round for jerky. I cut the steak across the grain with a my 240mm sujihiki (Japanese slicer) and was able to achieve very uniform strips for jerky. The right knife makes all the difference. I mixed up my usual marinade and refrigerated it overnight.

On Sunday morning, I made a Costco run to restock the liquor cabinet. I made an impulse buy at Costco – I saw a large container (of course it was large – it’s Costco) of Bitchin’ Sauce. Bitchin’ is a Southern California slang term from the late ’50s or early ’60s and was usually heard among the surfer crowd. It meant really cool – better than good.

I haven’t seen Bitchin’ Sauce in the store before. It’s made in Carlsbad, California and we used to buy it at San Diego County farmers’ markets. It’s an almond based chipotle dip – gluten free and kosher! It’s great with tortilla chips or crackers – in a word, it’s bitchin’.

I put the jerky on the Traeger in the afternoon and had it on the smoke setting P0. After two hours and forty-five minutes, I had a superb batch of jerky. I think it’s my best effort ever. I really think the evenly sliced strips contributed to the final outcome.

We also bought a whole chicken at Winco and I broke it down Sunday afternoon. It was fairly easy and didn’t take too long. Although whole chicken is a little cheaper than buying pre-cut chicken, we didn’t buy it to save money. I think you get a fresher product that’s arguably better quality than pre-processed chicken thighs or breasts. Once the chicken is cut up, it begins to oxidize and lose fluids. Pre-processed chicken may have been cut days earlier at a processing plant and who knows how long it’s been in transit before you finally buy it. Whole chickens broken down at home are definitely fresher. Plus, I can cut it the way I want it for yakitori.

I stayed off the pickleball courts Monday. I had to drive to west Mesa where I signed documents at Rocky Mountain Cummins for my refund. Mesa has a population of about half a million people spread out over 139 square miles. It really sprawls – it’s a 15-mile trip each way to get from our location in east Mesa to the west side of town. It’s the third largest city in Arizona and the largest city that isn’t a county seat. It has more people than Minneapolis.

While I was on the west side, I made another stop at Asiana Market. I picked up some nori (seaweed wrapper) and also mirin for yakitori tare. Back at home, I got to work on my kitchen knife handling skills. I made Japanese fried rice while Donna grilled baby bok choy and Jerk shrimp.

The weather on Monday was a little strange. The temperature reached the low 70s, but it didn’t feel like it. I was outside in my ham shack under the canopy and the cloudy skies coupled with a fairly stiff breeze made it feel a lot cooler. I had an interesting conversation with a guy named Frank in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. Frank and his wife are from Placitas, New Mexico and spend their winters in Puerto Vallarta. He told me that last year on the NFL Conference Championship weekend, they went to a local club which is like a large sports bar. He said he estimated there were around 200 patrons there. This year, they went to the same place last weekend. There were eight people there.

Many people that usually winter in Puerto Vallarta didn’t return this year due to Covid restrictions. Canadians in particular – their government requires citizens returning from Mexico to quarantine in a hotel at a cost of around $2,000. No choice – mandatory quarantine at a hotel selected by the government! He also told me that they usually go to the Walmart near their condo to stock up when they arrive for their winter stay. This year, they were stopped at the entrance and had to show identification. Anyone over the age of 60 was denied entrance to the store! This put a wrench in their shopping plans! They had to order contactless grocery delivery.

Donna and I hit the pickleball courts this morning. We were treated to excellent weather although it was a little more humid than usual. It’s sunny and 78 degrees as I type this at noon. The forecast calls for 80 degrees today, a high of 75 tomorrow and low 70s through the weekend. I can handle that!
