Grilling in the Dark

Before I started blogging, I had no idea of the amount of spam I would receive. I have software loaded on my WordPress template to block spam and prevent malicious logins.

Spammers typically try to post comments that are nothing more than links to a site they want people to visit. Spam is blocked and sent to a spam folder – I get 80 to 100 spam comments per day. Once a comment has been identified as spam, all future comments from that sender go to the spam folder. If a comment is posted by an unknown author, it’s held for moderation. This means that I have to look at the comment and decide if it legitimate or a spam attempt. If it’s legit, I approve it. The software has blocked over 59,000 spam attempts since I installed it.

Malicious logins are attempts to login as the administrator and take over my site. This is a scary thought – who knows what they would want to do with my site. The software has blocked more than 10,700 malicious login attempts. Having a strong password is important.

Donna’s sister picked her up yesterday afternoon and they drove to her house in Point Loma. Donna’s bicycle was there from Donna’s ride last Saturday. Donna was dressed for a ride and had a route planned out for a scenic ride back to Mission Bay RV Resort. She couldn’t have picked a nicer day – the temperature was in the upper 70s with clear skies. Other than a tough hill climb over the point on Talbot Street, she had a pleasant ride (map).

Donna surprised me with a gift the other day. When we were in Albuquerque, she bought it at the vendor area of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. She saw an item that she thought I would find useful during the short days of winter. Donna is really good at thinking ahead and finding useful gifts.

She knows how I dislike grilling in the dark. Working with a flashlight can be difficult if you have to use utensils at the same time. Donna found an LED headlight on an elastic band. I’ve used it a few times this week as it gets dark by 5pm. The headlight allows me to have plenty of light while my hands are free.

I used it last night to grill chicken. I paired a Stone Cali-Belgique beer with it. Stone calls it a California IPA with a Belgian twist. It’s their usual IPA recipe fermented with Belgian yeast which imparts a spicy flavor.

Other than a few clouds and cooler temperatures in the forecast for tomorrow, we expect the weather to stay nice through the weekend – 70s and blue skies.

Short Cycling

I’ve been trying to take it easy and let my hand heal from the trigger finger surgery. I looked back at my blog posts from October of last year and found the recovery time from the trigger finger surgery I had back then took longer than I remembered. The surgery last year released the ring finger on my right hand which is easier to work around than the middle finger I had done this time. One of the benefits of posting a blog is the ability to go back and look at past events and see what really happened.

Most of my activity has been limited to taking walks around the Mission Bay RV Resort or over to the bay. The weather has been a little on the cool side with daily highs in the mid 60s. That’s set to change today as we should see temperatures in the 70s with clear skies for the next week or so. We can’t complain about the weather!

On one of my walks, I noticed the marina across Rose Inlet past Campland to the west of the RV park was full. I don’t recall seeing this many boats there before.

While I was out walking, I also saw the smallest Airstream travel trailer ever. I don’t think I’ve seen one this small before.

I snapped a photo as I walked past. When I walked back on the next lane behind the Airstream, I noticed the large Dometic Penguin air conditioner on top. It looked oversized on this small unit.

Having an oversized air conditioner is not necessarily a good thing. It can cause a problem known as short cycling. This can happen in a regular sticks-and-bricks home as well as an RV. A short cycling air conditioner runs for a short period, then shuts off. Then it turns back on only to shut off again.

Short cycling can create a number of issues. One is excess humidity. Usually an air conditioner will run long enough for the moisture in the air to condense on the evaporator and drain, leaving the air relatively dry. When the A/C short cycles, it doesn’t condense as much moisture and the air can feel damp and uncomfortable.

The other issues are wear and tear. Stopping and starting the compressor excessively causes wear. On start up, the compressor motor draws a large spike of current – it takes more power and causes more wear to start the motor than it normally does while running. Also, if the compressor shuts off for only a short period of time before restarting, there can be residual head pressure in the compressor making it difficult to start.

I’m sure Airstream knew what they’re doing when they installed such a large A/C unit on a small travel trailer. I’m guessing they reduced the fan speed for lower cooling output to prevent short cycling.

I rode the scooter over to Costco on Morena Boulevard yesterday. We were on our last roll of paper towels, so I wanted to buy a bulk package of paper towels and pick up more bottled water. I need to have water with me at all times due to a chronic dry throat condition caused by head and neck radiation. I also picked up a bottle of Veuve Cliquot Brut champagne for Donna to ring in the new year at the end of the month. Veuve Cliquot is her favorite and Costco had it at a good price. The bottle included a custom-fit insulated vinyl bag for it. I picked up a 22-ounce bomber bottle of Stone IPA for me. This was a special release made with fresh hops and it’s meant to be enjoyed fresh, not stored. It had an “enjoy by 12-25-15” label. So I did.

Last night we grilled green chile turkey burgers on the Weber Q grill for dinner. Donna walked to Vons in Pacific Beach in the afternoon – about a four mile round trip – and picked up cheese bakery rolls. I toasted the rolls on the grill and they were so good with the burgers.

I enjoyed the Stone IPA with my burger. To be honest, I don’t know what the fresh hop IPA is all about – it tasted like a Stone IPA that’s always available at the store. With all of the craft breweries around here, everyone is always experimenting and trying to come up with the next hit beer. Whenever someone comes up with a winner, the copycats follow. I’ve seen a few fresh hop IPAs on the shelves here – I think it’s gimmick more than anything though. I don’t taste any difference.

Donna plans to catch a ride with her sister Sheila to her house today. She left her bike there last weekend. From Point Loma, she wants to tool around Shelter Island, then ride through Ocean Beach and back here (map). I think I’ll hit the beach at some point today and take a walk.

A Windshield Story

I spent most of Thursday watching NFL football. Mission Bay RV Resort had a steady influx of RVers Wednesday afternoon and more came in for the long holiday weekend on Thursday. There was a large group of people from four or more sites having their Thanksgiving feast at tables set up in the site across from us. They must have been locals as several carloads of people joined them.

Weather-wise, it was an iffy day to dine in the open air. They had their meal early and by the time it started raining around 3:30pm, they had most of their stuff put away. We planned to have Thanksgiving dinner at Donna’s sister Sheila’s house. Her friend, Dr. Jeff Sandler, picked us up on his way from La Jolla at 4pm. We had an enjoyable evening with much conversation and good food. Jeff dropped us off at home around 9pm. I didn’t take any photos – I don’t know why – maybe because I saw so many of the same looking shots on Facebook all day.

Donna bought a bottle of Hangar 24 IPA called Betty for me. Hangar 24 is a brewery located in Redlands, California up in Riverside County. Their Betty IPA is 6.8% ABV with 68 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

I enjoyed the bottle of Betty before going to bed. It’s a well-balanced west coast style IPA.

On Friday morning, I got the ladder out from under the coach first thing and removed the front windshield cover. I had an appointment with Pro+Tech to have new windshield glass installed.

The driver’s side windshield was cracked all the way from the bottom up to the top. Our insurance company, Allied, set us up for glass replacement through a company called Duncan Systems. Duncan Systems arranged to have both sides of our two-piece windshield replaced and sent the glass to Pro+Tech. The guys from Pro+Tech, Dan Oglesby and his son Gabriel (it’s a family run operation), arrived around 9am. They had the new glass in a rack in the back of their truck.

We had a few rain showers earlier and I was a little concerned about rain coming down while they were working. Dan said he would do one side at a time to minimize the amount of open area while the glass was out. He said he expected the job to take about three and half hours. We put Ozark the cat into her crate while they were working.

They didn’t waste any time and set to work. Our windshield glass is bonded to the window frame with a urethane adhesive. Some windshields are set in rubber moldings. Bonded windshields took over the auto industry in the 1990s. They started by cutting the urethane with special knives – one with a blade folded at a 90-degree angle to reach behind the glass to cut through the adhesive.

Once they had the old glass out, they spent a lot of time cleaning the frame and prepping it for the new adhesive and glass. Dan told me the windshield bonding had failed on three of the four sides of the old passenger-side glass. The windshield was only held in by the adhesive on the right pillar. He showed me where the adhesive had separated from the glass – you could see the dust intrusion. He said the glass probably wasn’t properly prepped. Some urethane adhesives require a primer to adhere to glass. He figured insufficient primer or dirty glass caused the separation. I’m glad I opted to have both sides replaced. I’ve read stories of people having the windshield glass pop out while leveling the coach. We were probably heading for a windshield story.

Once they had the frame cleaned and primed, he was ready to put the new glass in.

Once he lifted the new glass in place, he used rubber shims on the bottom edge of the glass to center it in the opening. He slapped the glass with an open palm to settle it in the adhesive and work any air bubbles out. Then he carefully masked the body around the glass with painter’s tape. The next step was filling in the void between the glass and body with more urethane. The urethane adhesive he used is a primerless product from Dow Chemical.

I watched most of the work performed and I’m satisfied that a good job was done. Dan was meticulous throughout each step of the process. If you need mobile auto or RV glass in San Diego, I highly recommend Pro+Tech.

I waited two hours before I reinstalled the windshield cover. Dan said the windshield would set well enough to drive after two hours, but 24 hours is better and the urethane really takes about a week to fully cure. We won’t be moving for another 10 days, so it should be fully hardened by then.

Around 4pm, I removed the dressing from my hand. The nurse at the surgery center told me to keep the original dressing on until Friday afternoon, then I could remove it – just keep it dry and cover with a band aid. The incision hadn’t closed up as much as I thought it would. I haven’t had to take any pain meds since noon on Thursday, but my hand is still swollen.

Friday evening I grilled chicken thighs on the Traeger. I know it seems strange to have grilled chicken the day after Thanksgiving. Sheila sent us home with turkey and assorted leftovers, but we didn’t have any bread and decided to save the turkey for sandwiches that we can make today.

We had a couple of passing showers in the afternoon before things dried out. It was a cool 60 degrees here yesterday. Today should be dry and a little warmer. Temperatures will continue to warm throughout the coming week and we should be having highs around 70.

Donna plans to ride her bike to Sheila’s house to check on her cat and pick up her car. Sheila is off skiing in Park City, Utah for the weekend. We can get some shopping done today and return the car tomorrow.

 

Awesome Sauce

Donna started her Sunday morning with a bike ride around Fiesta Island. I did my usual Sunday ritual hanging at the coach and watching NFL football. I suffered through another Charger loss. A season that started with such promise and high expectations has fallen apart. The only NFL team with more starters out due to injuries than the Chargers are the Baltimore Ravens and their season isn’t panning out either.

At the farmers’ market on Saturday, I bought two containers of Bitchin’ Sauce to have with chips while I watched football. When I first came to San Diego in 1969, I heard the term bitchin’. It confused me. I thought it meant bitching – but it was a slang term mostly used by surfers to mean cool or really good. At the farmers’ market, we sampled a few flavors of Bitchin’ Sauce and it was…well, it was bitchin’. I bought the chipotle and also a cilantro-chili.

It makes a great dip for chips or it can be spread on crackers or bread. The base for this dip is ground almonds.

We also bought fresh sausage at the farmers’ market. We cooked as suggested by the guy selling them. Donna put the three linked sausages in a pan of cold water and brought it to a boil. Once it boiled, she turned the heat off. Eight minutes later, I put the sausage links on the grill.

The sausage was stuffed with smoked gouda cheese. The boiling water actually cooked the sausage and toughened the casing. Putting it on the grill added grill marks and enhanced the flavor of the casing. Donna served the sausages over apples and onions sauteed in butter and fresh thyme with leftover Moroccan quinoa on the side.

The sausage was very tasty – we’ll buy it again and cook it the same way.

Today we plan to get in a round of pickleball – they have open pickleball at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center on Mondays (map). I won’t be able to play again for awhile. Tomorrow I’ll have surgery to release the trigger finger condition on my right hand.

The forecast calls for nice weather today and tomorrow – mid to upper 70s. A cold front will move in on Wednesday and the expected high temperature will be in the low 60s for the next several days with a chance of rain. That will be a good time for me to recover. I may not post again for a few days.

 

Seaport Village

Donna and I played pickleball at the Pacific Beach Recreation Center (PBRC) on Thursday afternoon. I won’t be able to play again for a few weeks. PBRC has pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Next Tuesday I’ll be at the Mission Valley Surgery Center to have a minor procedure on my right hand. I developed another trigger finger on the middle (long) finger of my right hand. It’s painful and my finger gets stuck when I close my fist. It flared up at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta where I did a lot of heavy lifting and pulling on ropes. This is the third finger to do this. I had surgery on my left middle finger in 2002, then I had surgery on my right ring finger last year.

On Friday morning, Donna went for a bike ride with her friend Johanna. They rode up the Rose Canyon bike path and up Gilman Drive to Torrey Pines (map). I’ve biked that route – it’s a nice ride. They stopped for breakfast at The Farmer and The Seahorse, a new restaurant with a nice outdoor patio. They were surprised to find an Airstream indoors that is kitted out as a private meeting room.

I mentioned before that our DHS Mobile Theatre amplifier blew. I did some research, but all I could find was a used replacement on eBay that was being sold “as is” with no guarantee it even worked. I called the original supplier, RiverPark, to see if they had any suggestions for replacing it. They didn’t show any availability online, but I thought they might know of a suitable alternative.

When I talked to their technical support guy, he told me they had a replacement unit in stock! I ordered the new unit and it arrived Friday night.

I installed the unit Saturday morning and we have five-channel surround sound again.

The weather here has been unbeatable – clear skies with the temperature near 80 degrees in the afternoon. The nights cool quickly and the temperature drops to the upper 50s overnight.

Saturday was the warmest day – it reached the upper 80s. Donna and I went out on the scooter in the late morning and rode to Seaport Village. Seaport Village is a touristy area on the waterfront west of downtown San Diego. It’s filled with quirky shops and restaurants. On Saturdays, they have an open air fish market at the Tuna Harbor pier. Local fisherman sell their fresh catch. We walked along the pier to see what was on offer.

They had fresh dorado, big eye tuna, blue fin tuna, live black cod and a long nose skate. We also saw a stand with live sea urchins. They prepared the live urchins and made sushi to order.

We didn’t buy any fish but we may in the future. We’ll have to see if we can come up with a method of cooking a whole fish – that’s how they sell them there.

The walk along the pier with the breeze coming off San Diego Bay was refreshing. Boats passed by and I was wishing I was out on one of them.

Off in the distance, we saw tents set up on the south end of Seaport Village. It was the San Diego Wine and Food Festival. We took a walk down there but decided not to buy tickets. Wine on a hot afternoon didn’t sound appealing.

As we walked back through Seaport Village, we looked in some of the shops. We also passed a carousel with kids riding the horses.

We scootered over to Cedar Street for the Little Italy farmers’ market. We found a stand selling hard (dry) sausage and couldn’t resist the sopressata. They also had raw sausage that we might cook today – we bought a three-pack of smoked gouda sausage. The guy selling it recommended cooking it by placing the sausage in a pot of water – you can add beer or seasoning and bring it to a boil. Once it boils, turn the heat off and let it sit for seven or eight minutes. Then grill the sausage. I’m going to try his method.

After we left the farmers’ market, we dropped off the sausages at home and rode to the Pacific Beach boardwalk. It was like a summer day – warm and sunny and lots of people on the beach. We wanted to stop for a cold one, but all of the places along the boardwalk were crowded. We ended up stopping at Amplified Ale Works a block off the boardwalk. We took a seat at their patio, but it was too warm to sit in the direct sun, so we headed home.

Last night, I prepared chicken leg quarters – I used a rub I recently ordered from Amazon called Lambert’s Sweet Rub-O-Mine.

Our friends Bud and Mona joined us for dinner. We dined outside at the picnic table. It was dark by then, but Mona is allergic to cats, so dining inside with Ozark wasn’t an option. The Lambert’s rub is a keeper – sweet and salty with a kick of chili pepper.

We sat outside until about 9pm before we walked Bud and Mona out to their car. The air was still and the bay was like glass. I shot a photo of lights from houses on the mesa to the east reflected on the black, glassy water.

Today we expect another sunny day with the temperature reaching 80 degrees. The forecast calls for a cooling trend starting on Wednesday. I’ll be watching football today.

Raccoons at the Park

Happy Veterans Day – first of all I want to express my gratitude and give thanks to all those who have served our nation, including my step-dad.

I closed my last post with a description of the accident our friend Deb Spencer (RollingRecess) suffered while hiking the Flat Iron Trail in the Arizona Superstition Mountains. This is a steep and difficult trail. Deb will undergo orthopedic surgery today to facilitate the healing of her shattered wrist. Our thoughts go out to her and we wish for the best results. I know she’ll have a long road of rehabilitation ahead to regain functionality and range of motion.

On Monday, I noticed the channel guide on my DISH receiver didn’t show all of the channels I pay for. One of the missing channels was ESPN. I went through the set-up menu and ran diagnostics, but it wouldn’t pick up the correct programming. I went online with DISH customer service and we ran through all of the steps together. It still didn’t work. I could see that the receiver was only locking in on one satellite (110) but the customer service guy didn’t focus on that. After going through all of the steps I had already performed, he threw his hands up and said, “I can’t fix it. I’ll have to send out a new receiver – it’ll arrive in a few days.”

Wouldn’t you know it, the San Diego Chargers were playing on Monday Night Football which is broadcast on ESPN.  So at 4:45pm, I rode the scooter with Donna over to the old visitor center at the foot of Clairemont Drive. Donna rode back home from there as I walked to Dan Diego’s on Morena Boulevard to catch the game. After a disappointing loss, I walked about two miles back home.

I walked past the mobile home section of the park – this area is finally coming to the end of a long-fought battle. The residents of the trailer park have to move out by January 13, 2016 – just a couple of months from now. A lot of the trailers are empty now but a surprising number are still occupied. As I walked by one unit, I saw three raccoons come out from under a trailer house.

A lot of people think raccoons are cute and harmless. But you don’t want raccoons in proximity with your home. Raccoons develop latrines – places where they habitually urinate and defecate. Raccoon feces commonly are infected with roundworms – a parasite that can be harmful to humans. I was surprised to see this particular trailer house was still occupied.

We had rain overnight and it was windy and cool on Tuesday. The high temperature for the day was only in the mid-60s. I rode the scooter over to Von’s grocery store and picked up two racks of baby back ribs. I prepared the ribs by removing the membrane from the bone side of the rack and dry rubbing them with Stubb’s seasoning and put them in the refrigerator.

Donna and I rode the scooter to the Pacific Beach Recreation Center (PBRC) at noon. The PBRC has open pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4:30pm. We joined a few other people there and set up the portable nets on the indoor courts. We had a crowd of players shortly after we got started. We were able to get five games in before we had to leave at 2pm. I wanted to get back so I could start the baby back ribs on the Traeger wood pellet smoker/grill.

I emptied the last of the hickory wood pellets I bought at Cabela’s into the hopper and fired up the grill a little before 3pm. I cooked the ribs for about three hours. The thing with ribs is you have develop a feel for how done they are – you can’t get a reliable reading with a meat thermometer because there are too many bones. I figured with the windy conditions and cool temperature, it would take three hours.

Meanwhile Donna prepared roasted smashed potatoes, cornbread and sauteed veggies. Our friends Bob and Sini Schmidt came over at 5:30 pm for a little happy hour conversation before dinner. They gifted me with a book – Complete Guide to San Diego Breweries 2014/2015 Edition. With more than 130 brewing company owned pubs in San Diego, a guide with ratings and information will be useful! We pulled the table extension out and brought in two extra chairs from the basement compartment and ate inside – it was cool and dark outside. Bob brought a few beers for us to sample – we split bomber bottles (22 ounces) of New English Brewing Pure and Simple IPA, Alesmith Horny Devil Belgian Style Ale, New English Bourbon Barrel Aged Brown Ale and I contributed a bomber of Lagunitas Maximus IPA.

We enjoyed the meal and the beers and talked for a few hours. We don’t have company for dinner in the coach very often, but it was comfortable and we had a fun evening.

Today is not only Veterans Day, it’s also Free National Parks Day! Donna and I plan to ride out to the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma (map) and take advantage of the free admission.

Electrical Gremlins

When we relocate, we don’t always go out and sightsee the area. We’ve spent time in Casa Grande before – we saw the Casa Grande ruins and Donna toured a working cotton farm. I wrote about it in this post. Our week in Casa Grande this time mostly revolved around playing pickleball. We started our days early, had breakfast and coffee and hit the pickleball courts around 8:30am. The park doesn’t allow pickleball before 8:30am due to noise complaints.

Of course the other thing we did most days was cook great dinners. On Saturday, I got the Traeger wood pellet grill out and cooked chicken quarters. Donna created a honey-sriracha glaze that I brushed on 15 minutes before I took the chicken off the grill. It was delicious. Donna served it with steamed asparagus and sweet potato mash.

On Saturday evening, we planned to watch a couple of episodes of Orphan Black. We have this new-to-us series on a hard drive that our friend, Joel, in Mesa recorded for us. We run the hard drive through my laptop which is connected to our TV with an HDMI cable. The show started to play, then the sound quit working. I was sure it had something to do with the laptop, but I couldn’t get it to work. Eventually I figured out that the sound worked on my laptop, but it wasn’t coming through the surround sound system.

Our coach is equipped with a DHS Mobile Theater System with QSurround 5.1. This system powers a five-speaker surround sound set-up. The amplifier has been running hot since we got the coach. I always open the cabinet that houses the amplifier to allow good air circulation to keep it from overheating.

I couldn’t get it to work, so we hooked up an external speaker to the laptop and used it for sound. On Sunday, I traced the wiring to the amplifier. I pulled the TV out of the cabinet. When the TV was upgraded to an LED flat screen, the installer did a good job of mounting the new TV. However, I found that he wired it incorrectly.

The TV has a mono audio output jack. He ran a connector from the mono output to a splitter, then ran two cables from the splitter to the stereo input on the amplifier. This created an impedance mismatch, hence the reason why the amplifier runs hot. The output from the mono audio output jack should have been run directly to the mono input of the amplifier. The DHS software would create a five-channel output from the mono input. It seems that the impedance mismatch burned out the amplifier.

The DHS amplifier also receives audio from the radio and creates a four-channel sound system. I tried operating that and it didn’t work either, leading me to believe the output stage of the amplifier is blown. The weird thing is, when I had the TV out, I disconnected the audio output jack and set the TV to run audio through the internal TV speakers. I got no sound from the TV. I’m finding it hard to believe that the TV internal sound system and the external DHS amplifier both blew at the same time. I need to investigate further. Meanwhile, I’ve watched four NFL football games without sound. It’s an interesting way to watch the games, but it can be hard to understand some of the penalties that are called without hearing the commentary. Yeah, I know – it’s hard to understand some of calls regardless of sound.

Donna had a new recipe going in the slow cooker all afternoon. She made pork tenderloin with apple, honey and cinnamon. It came out so tasty – kind of a sweet, Asian-flavored pulled pork.

We pulled out of Fiesta Grande RV Park on Monday and made the 170-mile drive to Fortuna De  Oro RV Resort in east Yuma (map). We stopped for lunch along the way at the Subway sandwich shop in Gila Bend. This Subway is located next to a truck stop with ample room to park a big rig. It even has a few full hook-up RV sites behind it!

When we arrived at Fortuna De Oro, there was a bit of confusion. I pulled into the driveway with a sign for Fortuna De Oro RV Park. There wasn’t any further signage or parking spaces. I continued down the road between park model home sites. I didn’t see any pull-through RV sites. Then I saw another entrance down the frontage road with a sign that read Fortuna De Oro RV Resort. I circled the RV park and got back on the frontage road and entered the drive at Fortuna De Oro RV Resort. There wasn’t anyone at the guard shack and I drove in. There wasn’t an office that we could see and the only signage was for the golf course and restaurant.

As we drove in, I saw the pull-through RV sites. I stopped and Donna walked over to a building marked Activities Office. She asked where we were supposed to check in. Turns out the check-in is at the office in the first place we stopped – the one with the RV Park sign. We were supposed to park alongside the frontage road across from the office to check in. How anyone would know this without any signage is beyond me. Donna phoned the office – they told her to pick out an empty pull-through site, then come to the office to check in.

We picked site 709. Donna walked to the office while I began to set up. The first thing I do is connect our Progressive Industries Electrical Management System (EMS). We had a problem. It didn’t show any power at the pedestal. I phoned Donna – she was at the office by then – and told her we had a problem. The receptionist at the office said we should have power, there wasn’t anything she does to turn it on. I checked a couple other sites and couldn’t get power at any of the pedestals.

About then, a maintenance guy from the park came up on a golf cart. I showed him the blank display on the EMS. A second maintenance guy arrived and said the pedestals were just reworked and should be okay. I went inside and got my Fluke multimeter. I read the AC voltage from the two hot legs to the neutral wire and read 120 volts on each leg. The pedestal was okay. My EMS wasn’t working. This was odd. It worked fine when I disconnected at Fiesta Grande that morning but was DOA when I plugged it in at Fortuna De Oro. This has been a bad week for electrical gremlins. I plugged our 50 amp shore power cable directly to the pedestal and powered up the coach. I don’t like being unprotected against power surges, but all I can do is send the EMS back to Progressive and have it repaired. It comes with a lifetime warranty and they provide excellent customer service.

They’re pretty serious about pickleball here. They have eight courts and some players that play at a high level. Donna and I hit the courts this morning and will do it again tomorrow.

One of the things I wanted to do in Yuma is get the coach washed and waxed. I’ve read on blogs and forums that Yuma is the best place price-wise to have this done. Apparently the competition is fierce and the prices are the best in the country. I made an appointment for a soft water wash, towel dry and hand wax of the entire coach. I’ll also have the wheels shined up.

We plan to pull out of here on Thursday, spend one night boondocking in the desert, then we’ll check in at Mission Bay RV Resort in San Diego on Friday.

New York Bar

Back in May, I wrote about my youngest daughter Shauna graduating from California Western School of Law in this post. After graduation, she moved from San Diego to Washington, DC where she had accepted a position with a large international law firm, Mayer Brown. Shauna works on securities litigation and compliance in their Washington, DC and New York City offices.

In July, she took the New York State Bar exam in Albany, New York. It is arguably one of the toughest bar exams in the country. As you can imagine, the exams are tightly monitored and have security requirements. To enter the exam room, you must show your seating ticket and an official government-issued photo identification such as a passport or driver’s license. They have a list of items that applicants are allowed to bring to the test center. All items must be in one clear, resealable plastic bag.

On the first day of the test, they had a half-hour lunch break. They were told to take their seating ticket and photo ID in their plastic bag for re-admittance to the test center.

Shauna sat with a group of attendees and had lunch outside. When she finished her lunch, she walked over to the trash receptacle and threw away the wrappers from her food. Then she realized she had thrown her plastic bag with her seating ticket and photo ID in the trash!  Normally, you could reach into the trash receptacle and retrieve your bag, but this was a secure trash can that was built more like a postal mail drop box. Once the trash is dropped inside, there’s no reaching in to retrieve it. It had a locked door on the side to empty the trash when it’s full. Shauna was in full panic mode. With no seating ticket and no photo ID, she wouldn’t be admitted back into the test center to continue her exam. Months of preparation for the bar were about to be wiped out.

She saw a police officer and asked him for help. He didn’t have a key for the trash bin, but he said that he could call for the maintenance crew to come and open it. She only had a few minutes of the lunch break left. One of her new-found friends tracked down an exam proctor and told her about the problem. It turned out this particular proctor was the lead supervisor for the crew. She had seen Shauna in the exam center earlier and recognized her. She told Shauna not to worry and to come with her.

This proctor took Shauna to the security desk and told the security people to let her in to the exam – her seating ticket and photo ID would follow once the trash bin was opened up. Shauna was totally on edge as she returned to her seat. You can imagine how tough it was to get her head back into the exam for the rest of the afternoon. At the end of the day, she was exhausted.

After the second day of the bar exam, she told me it was the toughest mental challenge she had ever faced. New York doesn’t set a target for releasing the exam results. Typically the results are revealed in November.

Yesterday, she was still at work in Washington, DC at 8pm when she sent me a text message. She passed the bar exam! Great news! According to an article in The New York Times, approximately 10,600 people took the exam. Only 61% passed. This percentage is skewed lower by the number of foreign-educated examinees. Exam takers who earned their degrees from an accredited school in the USA passed at a 79% rate.

We celebrated Shauna’s success with a cocktail, then cooked Cornish hens on the Traeger wood pellet grill. Donna prepared the hens by rubbing them with oil and seasoning them with salt and pepper. Then she used 6-ounce cans half full of pineapple juice inserted into the cavity to stand the hens up. This is a variation of the beer can chicken grilling method.

Donna served the hens with a balsamic tomato conserve, garlic smashed red potatoes and sauteed asparagus with peppers and red onion.

To be honest, I don’t think cooking Cornish hens on the Traeger is worth the effort. A whole chicken or chicken quarters gives much more bang for the buck in my opinion.

Shauna’s not finished with the New York State Bar – she still has to go through a character and fitness review. I don’t see her having any issues with that. She should be sworn in to the bar in January.

We have cooler weather today. I’m posting late because I spent the entire morning on the pickleball courts. Donna played for about two hours before heading back to the coach to take a call. I hung in there for three hours playing doubles with people from Canada staying here for the winter at Fiesta Grande RV Resort.

 

Polishing Headlights

Donna and I hit the pickleball courts Friday for the first time since we were in Santa Fe. The courts are on the west end of the RV park – our site is on the east end. As we were leaving the coach, Donna asked a woman passing by on her bicycle if she saw anyone on the pickleball courts. The woman said she hadn’t seen anyone doing much of anything in the RV park. No one came out for pickleball, so Donna and I played singles. It was fun and a good way to work on accuracy and positioning, but doubles is a better game. We played five or six games – about an hour.

After we came home and hung out for a while, I received a severe weather warning on my smartphone. Thunderstorms and a possibility of a severe dust storm (haboob) were in the forecast. I saw rain falling to the south of us and heard thunder. We had a couple of passing showers, but not enough rain to wet the roads.

At 4pm, hoping that the showers had passed, we hopped on the scooter to meet up with Mike and Jodi Hall at Lucky Lou’s. As we rode east on McKellips, we rode right into a rain shower. It rained on and off for more than an hour while we were at Lucky Lou’s and we rode home through showers on wet roads.

On Saturday morning, I rode the scooter down Main Street. The traffic was very light. Most of the RV parks are empty as it’s early for the snowbird season. I stopped at a motorcycle shop and ordered a new front tire for the scooter. Our front tire is worn and I didn’t like riding on a wet road the night before with a worn tire. It should arrive by Wednesday and I’ll have it installed then.

I made another stop at O’Reilly Auto Parts. I had a $10 gift card from the time I recycled our old batteries at O’Reilly in San Diego. I wanted to buy a headlight polishing kit. Our headlight covers are made from a polycarbonate material. When they’re manufactured, a coating is applied to prevent scratching and UV degradation (yellowing from sunlight). Over time it degrades – it’s a common problem on cars and trucks made in the ’90s and early 2000s. Our coach uses BMW E39 headlights. Ours are scratched and pitted from exposure.

After comparing a few products, I settled on Meguiars Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit. The kit is complete with sanding discs, polishing compound and a polishing wheel designed to be used with an electric drill – it even includes a microfiber cloth for the application of the protectant formula once the lens is polished.

I started by wet sanding with a 1000 grit sanding disc on a velcro sanding pad. Then I followed that with a 3000 grit disc. After sanding, I applied compound on the wool buffing pad with my cordless drill. It took about two hours – not including the half hour break while rain was falling – before I applied the protectant over the cover and declared it job done. It’s not perfect, but they are much better. When they degrade again, I think it’ll be time for replacement.

While I was working on the headlights, Donna had guests. She scheduled a meet-up through the local minimalist group to discuss downsizing and living on the road. Our friends, Lowell and Debi Hartvikson came and a woman named Cindy from the minimalist group also attended.

In college football action, the big game Saturday was the Michigan State University (MSU) Spartans against the University of Michigan (UM) Wolverines. The game was won as time expired in an improbable play by MSU. A local Michigan TV station, WZZM, apparently wanted to be the first to report on the game. Trouble was, they didn’t watch the final 10 seconds. They reported that UM defeated MSU for the Paul Bunyon trophy! That’s the problem with TV news coverage – being the first to report is more important then being accurate.

I grilled our favorite turkey burgers with special sauce for dinner, then we called it a day and watched a movie – Dallas Buyers Club. It’s based on the true story of Ron Woodruff.

Donna’s heading out for a bike ride this morning, I plan to spend the day watching NFL football.

Days Five and Six – Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

My alarm waking me at 4:25am and heading out to the Balloon Fiesta Park before 5am has turned the past few days into a blur. I’m having a hard time recalling the individual events as the days seem like one long continuum. We have breakfast at the Pilots’ Pavilion, then meet up with our balloon team at the pilots’ briefing before setting up the day’s launch. After we launch the balloon, we jump into vehicles and chase the balloon. Once the balloon lands, we disassemble it and head back to park for a tailgate party (even though it’s not even noon by then).

In my last post I mentioned the competition to drop a bean bag on a target. I left out a photo of a line of balloons descending over the park trying to be the closest to the target. Here’s the photo.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was day five of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Donna took a pass on crewing – she had a deadline to meet and a book signing scheduled for the evening. No competition was scheduled on this day – the featured event was the Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension. This showcases the international participants from countries around the world. The balloons representing the visiting countries go up in the first wave flying the flag of the country they represent.

I described partially inflating the balloon with a fan powered by a gasoline engine before using the propane burners to fully inflate the envelope and stand it upright in a previous post. A picture’s worth a thousand words, so here’s a photo of the fan used by our crew.

The wind direction was different than what we had previously experienced. We chased west across the Rio Grande River, then north through Corrales (map). We ended up in an area called Rio Rancho. Hearts A’Fire was coming down on top of a hill in an area of affluent housing. I looked at Google maps on my smartphone as we tried to find a way to meet our balloon before it was earthbound. We scrambled up a dirt road running between million dollar homes. One of the crew members named Alex – a young, strong, local fireman – and I jumped out of the SUV and ran through the brush. We hit a muddy patch, then arrived on another dirt road just as Brad had the basket touching down. We quickly grabbed the basket and put all of our weight on it to stop it. Another successful flight!

Along the way our pilot, Brad, had lowered the balloon into the Rio Grande River – that’s right, they did the splash and dash! He had two passengers on board, both representatives of his corporate sponsor (Cottonwood Mall) and they had wet feet. They were thrilled.

This morning (Thursday) Donna was up and ready with me. There was another competition today, so we launched offsite. After much debate among a few of Brad’s fellow pilots, we launched from an industrial park just west of the balloon fiesta RV park. The wind was fickle. The morning briefing and Dawn Patrol flight didn’t offer much insight into which direction the balloons could expect to go.

The event of the day was the Special Shape Rodeo. While we were out looking for a suitable offsite launch point, the special shaped balloons were launching from the field. There’s just about every character and shape you can think of.

The task for the competition today was to fly over the field and drop a ring over a pole. The wind was unreadable as the special shape balloons were going in every direction at very low speeds. Almost all of the balloon pilots guessed wrong and didn’t come anywhere near the field. I heard only three came close enough to attempt to drop a ring.

Our balloon went southwest. As we chased, we saw an interesting landing. There was a small park southwest of the field. As you go further south from there, downtown Albuquerque looms. For out-of-town pilots, the park seems like their last chance before they head into the downtown area with little to no landing opportunities. We were stopped on Osuna Road following the progress of Hearts A’Fire when we saw a small teardrop shaped balloon dropping quickly toward the park. The pilot must have been panicked about missing his last chance. He hit the field hard and the basket tumbled on its side as the balloon dragged it across the grass. A number of people in the park ran to the balloon and grabbed the basket, stopping it from moving any further. I hope the pilot wasn’t injured – it looked like a hard jolt.

Brad brought Hearts A’Fire down a few miles south of that park – local knowledge is king. He set down in a small lot next to a recycling center only a couple of miles from our coach! We arrived on scene just as he was about to touch down and ran from our chase vehicle to secure the balloon.

After we packed up the balloon, everyone returned to park to tailgate. The kids are off school Thursday and Friday for fall break. We had a lot of kids belonging to the crew at the park. I took over the grilling duties and grilled brats for the adults and hot dogs for the kids. We had a table full of food and, of course, the usual mimosas and beer for the adults.

First-time balloon passengers traditionally have a ceremony after their flight. Brad always goes through this ritual with first timers. Today was no different. I won’t go into detail of the ritual for fear of spoiling for a future first-timer. I’ll only say it involves the telling of the origin of first hot air balloon flight, champagne and an initiation to the world of ballooning.

Today the weather was much cooler than we’ve had. I don’t think we saw 70 degrees. The good news is we’ve been able to fly balloons every day so far. Tomorrow’s forecast looks good. Let’s hope we keep the streak alive.
